Alicante city is the capital of the Alicante province in the southern part of the Valencia region and is a Mediterranean sea-port from ancient times and is the second largest city in the region. Alicante has been inhabited for over 7000 years and has seen survived through major changes in control and leadership like the invasion by the Romans, Visigoths and Moors. Alicante is actually from the Arabic for ‘city of lights’ and has been known by a few names before that but was under control of the Moors till 11th century AD when Valencia became their own Royal Village under King James 2nd of Aragon.

The sea port soon became a major Mediterranean player in the export market but this didn’t last forever and Alicante just about survived the 18th and 19th centuries. Neutrality during the First World War meant that the port regained some of its former glory and has continued to grow and develop since encouraging a prosperous tourist trade within the region.
