Girona is a region in the northeast of Catalonia in Spain and the capital city is also called Girona and it was founded where four rivers converge, the Galligant, Guell, Onyar and Ter and has a population of around 95,000 people.
The original settles were Iberians and Girona was the home of the Ausetani a pre-roman tribe from the area and they created their own coins and referred to themselves as people from the Ausa, which later was adopted by the Romans as a name for a larger city in the same region.
The city is filled with the sense of an ancient and bloody history including several battles and various people conquering the region such as the Romans, Visigoths and the Moors. It also became the home to a large settlement of Jews in the 12th Century and saw plenty of military action in the wars of the 17th century wars with France and the Napoleonic wars later in the 19th century again with France.
The city has a feeling of a place that has seen it fair share of history with beautiful architecture in various styles and the steep hill leading up to where the fort had stood in strewn with evidence of the bloody history there. Capuchin Hill has been modernised in some parts but the ruins of the past are still visible. The other ancient site is the Cathedral which has been built in a gothic style and is an imposing and magnificent structure and was designed by Jaume Fabre and is famous for its wide arches. Other religious and historical places to visit in Girona are St Feliu, St Narcissus Chapel and The Benedictine church of St Pere de Galligant. There is also some evidence of the Jewish settlement around the city but most was destroyed after the expulsion of the Jews in 1492. Other architecture includes some Art Nouveau buildings and the riverside districts are also interesting to visit.
The region has been also been linked to cyclists who used Girona as a base for their training with Lance Armstrong having trained in this region too.
The climate in Girona is fairly mild for the region because it has wind from the Pyrenees to really keep it cool in the winter having an average high of between 7 and 8 degrees Celsius but average lows are 1 degree Celcius. Girona does manage to see a hot period in the summer where the average high is around 30 degrees Celsius which is definitely hot enough for a tan.
